Hamsters: Fun Facts About These Cute Creatures

Hamsters are among the most loved pets of people

Hamsters, rodents belonging to the subfamily Cricetinae, are indeed cute creatures, and here are the additional reasons to adore them with these fun facts.

Syrian hamsters can hold their alcohol. They live in dry habitats from southern Turkey to northern Syria, based on the article in Mental Floss. They store fruit in the summer and rely on it as their food during the winter months. However, when it comes to that point, the fruits are already fermented. With this, they have developed comparatively large livers that allow them to metabolize alcohol.

Not all of them are fit to be a pet. Among the known 24 species of this creature, only 4 can be found in pet shops. These five species are Roborovski, Syrian, Russian dwarf winter white, Chinese, and Campbell’s dwarf.

Most of them are overly solitary. In some instances, a hamster would fight to the death if it invaded the other’s territory.

They are great at reproducing. Their gestation cycle is one of the shortest in the mammalian class. They can delay birth by as many as nine days if the birth conditions are not right. After giving birth, a hamster can be pregnant again within 24 hours.

Their parenting style is kind of doubtful. A mother hamster is known that it can eat her child if the father is not around. It is believed that this will happen if the mother sees the litter is too big to make sure they have the resources needed for the remaining babies.

They are not nocturnal. These creatures are crepuscular and this means that they’re most active during twilight hours.

The wheel might be bad for them. It is common for the hamster cage to have wheels. They love to run but wheels are too small, they can cause pain, spinal problems, and even lead to arthritis.

Their name described their character. The term hamster is from the German word hamstern, which means “to hoard.” This animal, even when domesticated, loves to hoard even if they don’t need it.
